Generate KiwiSaver Scheme, Community Finance and Ōtautahi Community Housing Trust (ŌCHT) collaborate to build new homes in Christchurch.

Just in time for Christmas, the Generate KiwiSaver Scheme has partnered with Community Finance to make a $14 million impact investment to finance 35 new homes for people in need.

The homes are part of a new community development that will revitalise Willard St in the Christchurch suburb of Spreydon.

Cate Kearney, Chief Executive of ŌCHT, said: “The partnership with Generate KiwiSaver and Community Finance will have a positive impact in the lives of 35 whānau and provide a secure foundation for these families to live and build a future.

“This impact investment provides a significant boost to our ability to plan and build new community housing in Ōtautahi. It provides the certainty we need to further unlock the potential for new homes now and into the future.”

The Community Finance investment structure enables the opportunity for positive financial returns for Generate KiwiSaver members over the long-term, while providing a positive social impact to benefit Aotearoa.

Ayrton Oliver, Generate Portfolio Manager, said: “Ethical investing is one of our core values at Generate, so we often seek out investment opportunities that have the potential to drive both positive financial returns and positive social impact - we don’t believe these need to be mutually exclusive.”

Community Finance facilitates and manages lending by issuing Community Bonds which provide an innovative way to tackle the housing crisis where wholesale investors support the financing of homes that are owned and managed by leading charitable Community Housing Providers, such as ŌCHT.

Despite recent falls in house prices, the increased cost of living and short supply of affordable houses in New Zealand has exacerbated the lack of capacity in the rental market and increasingly unaffordable rentals.

James Palmer, Chief Executive of Community Finance, said New Zealand’s significant housing and cost of living crisis impacts the country’s vulnerable population most.

“We are focussed on encouraging investors to choose investments that also have a positive social impact in our country. Key to this is collaboration and commitment from KiwiSaver providers, fund managers, and foundations to work with Community Finance to back leading Community Housing Providers like ŌCHT, to continue the incredible work they do while also delivering positive returns for investors.”

The construction of the new development in Ōtautahi has already begun and the homes are on track to be completed in 2023.

The new homes will be built to the New Zealand Green Building Council’s Homestar 6 standard. The homes will be constructed with low maintenance, durable materials and be well-insulated and thermally efficient.

Cate Kearney said the new-look Willard Street meets ŌCHT’s goal of sustainably providing warm, dry, and healthy homes that set new standards for community housing.

“We want to provide houses that people come to see as homes, in a community they’ll build in a great place to live. Generate’s purposeful, ethical investment in our work will help us ease the pressures of housing scarcity and homelessness and give our communities new opportunities to grow.”

Ayrton Oliver said: “I think there’s no denying that 2022 has been a pretty rough year for many Kiwis, so it’s really nice to finish up the year by wrapping up a deal that will create positive change in our community, while still delivering attractive returns for our members.”

Impact investing is nothing new to Generate. In 2020 Generate was the first KiwiSaver scheme to invest in social housing via a $21 million investment managed by Community Finance into Salvation Army Community Bonds. That investment supported118 warm, dry, affordable community houses across three locations.

Since its launch in 2020, Community Finance has already advanced over $100 million and the latest impact investment will see it surpass $120 million of lending.

Generate commits NZD55 million to private equity

The Generate KiwiSaver Scheme has committed to a USD25 million investment with CIM Group, a Los Angeles-based real estate and infrastructure owner, operator, lender and developer, to invest in mid-market North American infrastructure, in sectors including renewable energy, data centres, waste to renewable energy and social infrastructure, alongside a USD7.5 million investment into Novva Data Centers - a U.S.-based data centre company with ambitious growth plans.

Generate Chief Investment Officer, Sam Goldwater, said “One of the key attractions of CIM Group is that the firm focuses on sectors that have clear structural tailwinds. For example, investments in solar and waste to renewable natural gas businesses have the potential to materially benefit from the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) in the US as it provides meaningful tax incentives for renewable energy projects; and investments in data centres are looking to benefit from the digitilisation trend and the huge investment into A.I. occurring in the U.S.”

Generate’s members have had a great experience from investments into renewable energy and data centres to date, enjoying strong returns from the likes of Tilt Renewables and seeing meaningful uplifts in the valuations of Infratil’s investments in (renewable energy company) Long Road Energy and Canberra Data Centres. These investments have contributed to Generate’s market leading returns over the last 10 years*. We believe Generate’s investments with CIM will positively contribute to our members’ returns over the next 10 years.’

This is Generate’s third significant investment into alternative assets in the last 12 months. Late last year the KiwiSaver and wealth provider committed to invest $20 million in the New Zealand based Movac Growth 6 Fund; a later-stage VC fund invested in Kiwi tech companies; and earlier this year Generate committed $20 million into Icehouse Ventures’ Growth Fund II - a VC fund that will support around 20 established New Zealand technology companies win on the global stage.

About CIM Group:

CIM is a community-focused real estate and infrastructure owner, operator, lender and developer. Since 1994, CIM has sought to create value in projects and positively impact the lives of people in communities across the Americas by delivering more than $60 billion of essential real estate and infrastructure projects. CIM strives to make a meaningful difference in the world by executing key environmental, social and governance (ESG) initiatives and enhancing each community in which it invests. Generate Adviser takes on 30 marathons in 30 days to raise money for Movember.

This November, we’re supporting Generate adviser, Rob Wearing, as he takes on a (self-appointed!) challenge to run 30 marathons in 30 days in the hopes of fundraising $30,000 for charity, Movember.

Movember is an annual event where men are encouraged to grow moustaches during the month of November to raise awareness for men's health issues, such as prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and men's suicide.

More recently, challenges like Robs have been the driving force for Movember fundraising across New Zealand.

We’re super proud of Rob and truly impressed by the challenge (30 marathons!), and so Generate have committed to donate $333 for every marathon Rob completes up to a total of $10,000!

When we asked Rob about his motivation, he said “This is a cause that is very close to my heart and I can’t wait to get started. Last year I ran 1,000kms over the month, completing various challenges along the way and ended up raising over $10,000. So really trying to push the boat out this year.”

Rob’s goal is to raise $30,000 for Movember. If you’d like to support him, check out his official Movember fundraising page here and keep up to date with his progress on his Instagram page @hittheroadrobbie.

We’ll also be updating our social media with all Rob’s key milestones so make sure you follow us on Instagram and Facebook.

Generate’s KiwiSaver funds are top performing for another quarter!

For the second quarter in a row, we are pleased to share our chart-topping results. Generate is proud to have the top ranking Aggressive and Moderate Funds for 10-year performance in the latest Morningstar report.

🏅Generate KiwiSaver Focused Growth Fund ranked 1st in the NZ
Multi Sector Aggressive Category*

🏅Generate KiwiSaver Moderate Fund ranked 1st in the NZ Multi
Sector Moderate Category*

Generate’s funds were also called out as some of the ‘top performing KiwiSaver funds of the last decade’ in a recent article by stuff.co.nz

Stuff.co.nz reiterated what Generate has long been saying the importance of long-term performance, “when you’re comparing results, it is helpful to look over a long period of time, rather than focusing on short-term movements”.

KiwiSaver is a long-term investment, so the performance of your fund types over a greater period should be something you take notice of whilst still remembering that past performance does not predict the future.

Generate’s KiwiSaver Growth fund also scored highly, maintaining its second place ranking with an annualised 10-year return of 8.3% versus the industry average of 7.6%.

Over a long period of time these small differences can really add up, thanks to the power of compounding returns. By the time you reach retirement the difference could potentially be tens of thousands of dollars.

We believe these latest results validate our company ethos and commitment to investing for the long-term and empowering Kiwis to make smart decisions regarding their KiwiSaver savings.

Grow your KiwiSaver balance in 2024!

As we settle back into routines after the Christmas break many of us will start to think about how we can achieve the goals we’ve set for the year, and work out what needs to be done to set ourselves up for a positive year.

If any of your 2024 goals relate to setting yourself up for financial success – make sure to consider your KiwiSaver account as part of this! Your KiwiSaver investment shouldn’t always follow a “set and forget” strategy – in fact we recommend checking-in on your account setup every year, or sooner if your employment situation or savings goals change.

A few tweaks to your KiwiSaver account now could make a huge difference to your savings in the long-term – and it doesn’t take long to review your account!

First – use our KiwiSaver Calculator and see how much money your KiwiSaver account is currently on track to save by the time you need it.

Find our KiwiSaver Calculator here

Now let’s consider ways to help boost your projected balance!

1- Consider increasing your KiwiSaver contributions.

If you are employed and contribute to your account via your wages or salary, you have the option of contributing 3%, 4%, 6%, 8% or 10% of your income to your KiwiSaver account. While the difference between these contribution rates isn’t much, increasing your contribution by just 2 or 3% could make a significant difference to your savings over the long-term.

To see how much more, you could save for retirement if you increased your KiwiSaver contribution rate, try adjusting your contribution rate in our KiwiSaver calculator.

If you are self-employed or unemployed your contributions are completely up to you. Consider preparing a budget or talking to a financial adviser to see how much money you can afford to contribute to your KiwiSaver account.

2-Check that your KiwiSaver fund type suits your goals.

If your current KiwiSaver goal is to save for a comfortable retirement and that’s still at least 10 years away, a fund focused on growth is could be a good option for you. At Generate we have two fund options in this category, our Growth Fund and our Focused Growth fund. These funds have the potential to earn more over the long-term, but they could experience more up’s and down’s along the way, which is why they’re generally recommended for those with a long-term savings goal, rather than someone who plans to withdraw their money soon.

If you do intend to use your KiwiSaver savings soon – perhaps for your first house or if you’ll reach retirement in the next few years, then our Conservative or Defensive Funds could be more appropriate, as these funds are generally more stable in the short-term.

Depending on your savings goals and investment timeframe, it might be worth changing your current KiwiSaver fund type. We recommend talking to a KiwiSaver adviser before changing your fund type, as in some situations there are good reasons not to change your fund type.

To talk to a Generate KiwiSaver Adviser, call us on 0800 855 322.

3- Make sure you don’t miss out on the extra $500 from the Government.

Every year KiwiSaver members between 18 and 65 years can get an extra $521.43 from the Government. To be eligible, you need to make sure you contribute at least $1,042.86 to your KiwiSaver account between July 1 and June 30 every year.

Download the Generate app or log in to your Generate account online to see how much you’ve contributed since the 1st of July 2023 and make sure you’re on track!

Eligibility does apply read more here: https://www.generatewealth.co.nz/kiwisaver/government-contributions

4- Don’t underestimate the value of advice.

Research shows financial advice adds long-term value to your savings.

More than two thirds of advised New Zealanders say that advice has led to outcomes such as a better understanding of the risks of their financial plan (77%), a better understanding of how to achieve their financial goals (74%), and they are better equipped to actually stick to these financial plans (70%)^.

Our KiwiSaver advisers take pride in providing simple, straightforward KiwiSaver advice to help Kiwis make smart investment choices. We have advisers right across the country available to help you with your KiwiSaver savings goals for 2024 - get in touch to talk with one today.

We are here to help you set up your KiwiSaver account goals for 2024, you can contact us on 0800 855 322 or email us at info@generatekiwisaver.co.nz.

How a KiwiSaver account can kick start your child's financial future

Should I set up a KiwiSaver account for my child?

When it comes to setting up your kids for a strong financial future, the earlier you can get started, the better.

While many parents and guardians are well aware of savings accounts and the habit of popping a bit of money away for their child each year, we often get asked whether it’s a good idea to set up a KiwiSaver account for children too.

A KiwiSaver account is not just a savings account; it’s an investment which if nurtured well, can grow into a very helpful chunk money by the time the child is ready to buy their first-home.

However, KiwiSaver has strict rules – particularly around withdrawals, so it’s important to understand both the benefits and limitations on how KiwiSaver works for children before deciding if it’s right for your family.

Benefits of setting your children up with a KiwiSaver account:

1. Paves the Way for Homeownership:

New Zealand's housing market doesn't come cheap, and let's face it – many parents might still be chipping away at their own mortgage when their kid is ready to jump into the housing game. It can be a bit overwhelming!

That’s where a KiwiSaver account can help. Setting your child up with a KiwiSaver account early and investing a bit of cash into their account each year, could help their balance reach a healthy bump, by the time they are ready to buy their first home.

2. Unleashing the Power of Compound Returns:

The magic of compound returns is a key feature of having a KiwiSaver account. Starting early allows contributions to benefit from ‘a long-time in the market’ and their funds and any returns benefit from the compounding effect each year.

"Time in the market" refers to the concept that the longer an investor stays invested in the financial markets, the greater the potential benefits over time. Longer investment periods allow for compounding returns. Over time, earnings on an investment generate additional returns, and these returns, in turn, generate more returns. Compounding can significantly boost the overall growth of an investment.

3. An introduction to investments:

Introducing children to the concept of KiwiSaver can provide valuable financial education and instil good savings habits. As your child gets older, they can learn about important investing concepts and risk and reward to help set them up for success.

4. Encouraging Family Financial Collaboration:

Having a KiwiSaver account is not just an individual endeavour; it's an opportunity for family collaboration. You, Grandparents and/or other members of the family can contribute to your child's KiwiSaver account, creating a collective effort that accelerates their savings journey and emphasizes the importance of financial support within the family.

5. Preparation for adulthood

Having a KiwiSaver account can be an early step towards financial independence. It teaches children about the importance of planning for their future and taking control of their financial well-being.

Understanding the considerations and limitations

Withdrawals and accessibility:

The KiwiSaver scheme was designed by the New Zealand Government and has strict rules – particularly around withdrawals. Your child’s KiwiSaver savings can only be withdrawn either when they are ready to buy their first-home – or when they reach retirement.

Both of these are likely a LONG time away for your child, and while this means the funds get the benefit of having a long time in market to grow – it’s important to remember that they are locked away and can’t be withdrawn at any time.

Fees:

It’s important to note, that while you can open a KiwiSaver account with no minimum investment, you will still be charged annual fees for an account including a $3 monthly administration fee. This is why we generally only recommend opening a KiwiSaver account for under 18’s, if you (or they) plan on regularly contributing to the account – it doesn’t have to be much, but a regular contribution of (for example, $100 per year) will help you realise the benefits of compounding returns.

You can make lump sum transfers to an account as and when you like or set up an automated direct debit.

Extra benefits not available for under 18 years:

And while KiwiSaver has some great benefits that no other investment offers – these unfortunately are not available for those under 18 years. For example, to be eligible for the annual Government contribution you must be between 18 and 65 years, and even if you have a teenager who is working, their employer is not required to contribute 3% to their KiwiSaver account until they turn 18 (although some choose to anyway – it’s worth asking the employer).

So, should you do it?

Well, if you are focused on long-term savings for your child’s future, especially for their first-home, a KiwiSaver account could be a very beneficial investment, considering potential investment growth so long as you are happy to continue contributing a small amount each year, until your child is ready to take over the account themselves.

However, we recommend talking to a KiwiSaver or financial adviser first to discuss your specific situation, goals, and the best approach for your child's financial future.

What you need to know about fraudulent activity and financial scams, and how to protect yourself.

What you need to know about fraudulent activity and financial scams, and how to protect yourself.

There’s been a significant rise in fraudulent activity and scams in the financial industry recently. These scams can result in financial losses and in many cases the money can’t be recovered. While many Kiwis tend to adopt a “she’ll be right” and “it won’t happen to me” mentality, scammers are getting smarter and fraudulent activity is getting harder to detect. Everybody is a target.

That’s why we wanted to remind our members about some of the different types of popular financial scams, so you can stay alert and keep your money safe.

Phishing Scams

Phishing is when someone tries to trick you into giving them sensitive information, like your passwords, login, credit card numbers, or personal details. They do this by pretending to be someone trustworthy, like your bank, your KiwiSaver provider or an online store. They might send you an email that looks real, with a link to a website that also looks real, but it's actually fake. If you fall for it and enter your information, they can use it to hack
into your accounts. So, it's important to be careful and double-check before giving out any personal info online, especially if you're not sure about the message or the website it's from.

Protecting yourself:

Generate will never ask for your credit card number, login details or password.

Scams come in many different forms – phone calls, online shopping, text messages, mail addressed to you, letterbox drops, social media posts, and messages. An email is a popular form of contact for scammers so beware of emails asking you to click a link or submit your personal information.  One of the first things to check is the sender's email address – look out for unusual spelling, random numbers or characters within the sender's email address, or just generally an unknown sender address. We have suggested some tips below to keep you safe:

  • Never share your login details, password, or PIN with anyone.

  • Avoid repetitive or sequential numbers for your PIN. Never use your birthday – it’s the first thing a scammer will try.

  • Be aware that Generate will never ask you to disclose your PIN over the phone.

  • Keep your computer and phone’s security software up to date.  Automate the updates.

  • Avoid using public Wi-Fi.

  • Don’t click on links sent by someone you don’t know or seem out of character for someone you do know.

  • Hover over the links to reveal the actual site. If it doesn’t seem right, call the sender using contact details you already have or that are available on their website.

  • Never give someone remote access to your computer or device if you didn’t initiate the call yourself.

You can also help others stay safer online by reporting any online scams you come across at CertNZ.govt.nz

Remember if it looks too good to be true, it probably is!

Remote Access Scams

Remote access scams are when someone contacts you out of the blue, claiming to be from a tech support company or company you engage with (e.g. Amazon, your Bank, your KiwiSaver provider). They might say there's a problem with your computer or your online account, or that they need to fix some security issue urgently. They'll then ask you to give them remote access to your computer, usually by downloading a program or visiting a website they provide.

Once they're in, they can mess with your computer, steal your personal information or even lock you out of your accounts.  So, if someone you don't know reaches out and asks for remote access to your computer, it's best to report it. And never give access to your computer to someone you don't trust or didn't initiate contact with.

Protecting yourself:

Generate will never ask you to give us remote access to your computer or phone, or to download software like Anydesk or Team Viewer.

Make sure you always know what you are downloading, how it works and why you are downloading it.

Beware of anyone asking you to take action – especially if they insist you act with urgency. Scammers often use a sense of urgency as a way to prevent victims from thinking clearly. If they do contact you, break contact with the offender and call the company back using the details you already have or that are available on the verified company website.

Cold Call Scams

This is when you are contacted unexpectedly and asked for your personal details, which could give the scammers access to your accounts. Some common signs of this scam are when they may say to keep your account safe you need to transfer money to another account, give them personal or account information like login or passwords. If you experience an unknown caller asking for your personal details the best thing to do is hang up and block the number.

Protecting yourself:

Beware of anyone calling you off an unknown or international phone number. If you are not expecting a call – don’t answer. Wait for them to leave a message, send a TXT or google their phone number.

Generate do not have any international teams and we will never call you from an international phone number.

We'll also never ask you to move money to another account to keep it safe or help us catch criminals or hackers.

Generate Wins Third Consumer NZ People's Choice Award for KiwiSaver

We’re thrilled to share that we’ve been honoured with a prestigious Consumer NZ People's Choice Award for the third consecutive year!

Thanks so much to our members who gave Generate high praise for outstanding customer service, clear communication, and impressive investment performance.

“The Consumer NZ People’s Choice Award is a testament to our focus on delivering strong long-term returns for our members and providing quality service and advice.” said Kristian James, Generate Distribution Manager.

Generate’s long-term performance results in the last Morningstar KiwiSaver Survey showed three of our KiwiSaver funds in the top two of their respective categories for 10-year returns - and we're keeping our eyes peeled for the next report due in a few weeks.

Generate KiwiSaver Moderate Fund ranked 1st for 10-year returns in the NZ Multi Sector Moderate Category*

Generate KiwiSaver Growth Fund ranked 2nd for 10-year returns in the NZ Multi Sector Growth Category*

Generate KiwiSaver Focused Growth Fund ranked 2nd for 10-year returns in the NZ Multi Sector Aggressive Category*

“It’s great to see smaller fund managers outperforming big businesses in terms of satisfaction and service,” says Jon Duffy, chief executive at Consumer.

The Consumer NZ People's Choice Awards are highly regarded in the industry and serve as a valuable resource for consumers seeking trustworthy and reliable brands.
